This yacht model is built to a
scale of 1/4"=1'0"(38-1/2" model
length). The Andromeda La Dea is considered a
super yacht, featured in yachting magazine advertisements
and reviews. Robert H. Eddy & Associates
constructed the model over the past 3-1/2 years,
4,000 plus hours. The model construction is the
most complicated model built to date requiring
cutting edge technology and materials. The model
is completely scratch-built. The metal work on
the model is all built from raw materials of
sterling silver, then rhodium plated to prevent
tarnishing, and or sand-blasted and plated to
give a brushed aluminum appearance to match that
of the real yacht.
The use of the computer has enabled
us to draw details from full scale dimensions
taken from the boat directly and printing out
those details at the scale the part is to be
built at. The use of computer and CAD programs
were utilized to create drawing files, which
were then converted into DXF format 'cut-files',
from which a laser was used to cut parts from
materials such as wood and acrylic. Without the
use of this technology, the model would have
cost more and some details would not have been
able to be built. Art work for the name and hailing
port on the transom was also created to match
the real boat which would not have been possible
at that scale.
The case and pedestal were built
from French walnut by William
Evans cabinetmaker, Waldoboro, Maine. The
model will be displayed using anti-reflective
glass. The model and case now reside in the owners
home in Bermuda delivered December of 1995.
Recently as of Spring 1998, we
have returned the model to San Francisco where
the climate is much more favorable on the model.
