The yacht PELAGIAL is
a completely custom-designed-and-built Hinckley 56-foot
ketch. Launched in 1982, she was used extensively
by her owners from Vermont. The captain for many
years
was the late Vail Marvin. We were asked to build
a model because the owners were giving her up and
had
fond memories from their days at sea. What a great
way to preserve those memories in a 3-dimensional
scale model!
We have approximately
2,000 man-hours in the construction of this model
over a three-year period. The hardware is all custom
built from sterling silver and is rhodium plated
to prevent the tarnishing of the metal over the
years. The hull is constructed from basswood, and
the deckhouse constructed from acrylic. The spars
are basswood, and the case was built by William
Evans, from Waldoboro, Maine. He used a curly
maple veneer for the base, and the model is enclosed
in anti-reflective glass.
